Below we discuss what actually makes Rastafarianism unique.
Rastafarianism
Rastafarianism was born in Jamaica where the religion is practiced today. There were many reasons behind its creation including racism against the black Jamaican population, the influence of African slaves in Africa, and their dissatisfaction with Christianity. However, the reason for which this particular religion is called Rasta is due to the fact that the first Rastafarians were from Jamaica and they used to call themselves “rebels”. They felt that the traditional Christian church had failed to address their concerns, and they wanted to return to what they considered the original teachings of Jesus Christ.
Dreadlocks
The dreadlock is the top hairstyle associated with the rastafarian culture. This style is not only unique but it is associated with the religion too. The dreadlock is created by braiding long hair into small sections. Then those sections are pulled back and tied tightly at the nape of the neck. There are different types of dreadlocks. Hairstyles like the cornrows, flat twists, and twists are also popular among the Rastafarians.
Skins
Skins are white garments worn by Rastafarians. These clothes are usually designed to be loose fitting and comfortable. They are often adorned with images of the Ethiopian Emperor Haile Selassie I. Other religious symbols are sometimes found on the clothing as well. For example, the T will often be printed on the front of the collar. It stands for the Biblical translation of Thine Is The Kingdom.
Reggae Music
Reggae music is another form of expression linked to the Rastafarian movement. The roots of reggae date back to 1940s when the Jamaicans adapted rhythms of their African ancestors. Today, Reggae music is very popular throughout the world.
