What is the Significance of Rasta Swimsuit?
The Rastafari movement was started by Bob Marley who believed in Jah (God) and refused to serve in the British Army during World War II. He claimed that he could not follow orders to harm his fellow humans. His beliefs were adopted by many people at the time and they began to wear afros and listen to music. In Jamaica, the first Rastas were called Capos, after Marcus Garvey’s ‘Black Man’ philosophy. At that time, many Jamaicans wore dreadlocks; this style is often referred to as Rastafarianism.
Rastafari Movement
In 1959, the Rastafari movement spread out to Ethiopia, Trinidad and Tobago, India, Germany, England, and the United States. There are now Rastafari communities all over the world. Rastafarians believe that God created us all equal. We should live our lives according to that belief. They do not worship any human beings or things. They just want to help others by giving out religious books, clothes, food, and money. Many Rastafarians believe in one single Goddess, known as Queen Mother Africa. She helps protect the whole universe.
Dreadlocks
Dreadlocks are long, thin locks of hair that hang down the back of the head. They can take months or even years to grow. People usually start dreadlocking when they feel spiritual. The Rastafari movement also believes that black people should only cut their hair once every twelve months. They call it dreadlock cutting day. They have different meanings to them depending on where you get your hair cut. If you get your hair cut in America, the meaning is different than if you got your hair cut in Jamaica.
Roots Reggae Festival
The Roots festival is held every year in New York City. The Roots started in 1998. They decided to put together a reggae album cover contest. This contest was a way for bands to show off their talent. Their goal was to find new unsigned artists. This contest helped them discover several well-known artists. Soon, the Roots had grown bigger and started to hold annual festivals in New York City. Artists perform at these festivals and everyone gets up and dances. The Roots hold two big festivals every year. One is called The Roots Picnic which takes place in Central Park. The other one is called The Roots Reggae Festival. The Roots Reggae Fest is held in Madison Square Garden. This festival shows how popular reggae music is becoming.
